HOW WE GREET IN AFRICA
In Africa, a greeting is rarely just a greeting.
It is a way of saying, “I see you.”
In many African cultures, we don't simply walk past someone without acknowledging them. We ask, How are you? How is home? How is work? How is the family? Sometimes, the conversation takes longer than expected and that's okay.
A child may bow, kneel, or prostrate to greet an elder.
A younger person may wait for an elder to speak first.
A handshake can carry warmth, respect and friendship.
A smile can say what words cannot.
